What Are the Risk of Exposing RDP: 6 Common RDP Threats to Avoid

Is RDP secure? Generally, no. RDP, unified as Windows App now, is a transport protocol inherently vulnerable to external attacks due to its design. Common threats include:

  • Danger Ports & Naked Protocol Tunneling: Exposing RDP ports directly to the internet creates an open bridge for attackers to intercept data, inject malware, or launch disruptive DDoS attacks.

  • Repeated & Weak Passwords: Simple or reused credentials (like email or social media passwords) are easily cracked or stolen via brute-force attacks, granting instant unauthorized access.

  • Session Hijacking: Hackers can seize control of active RDP sessions to plant malicious code, steal sensitive data, or sabotage systems undetected.

  • Server Exploits: Critical vulnerabilities (e.g., remote code execution flaws) in Microsoft's RDP service have historically allowed attackers to bypass security—future risks remain inevitable.

Way 1. Use VPNs - Useful Warrior

VPNs Protection Principle

To enhance remote desktop protocol security, VPNs secure RDP access by redirecting traffic through encrypted tunnels and masking the default port 3389, which RDP inherently relies on for connections—thereby preventing hackers from directly intercepting or exploiting this vulnerable entry point.

By rerouting connections through alternative ports and private networks, VPNs effectively shield the exposed "bridge" between users and RDP servers, blocking unauthorized access attempts like brute-force attacks or session hijacking.

Recommended free VPNs for secure RDP: Proton VPN, Windscribe, PrivadoVPN, Hide.me, and Radmin VPN.

Way 2. Apply Firewall Protection - Line of Defense

Firewalls act as a protective barrier around your remote connection, monitoring and filtering incoming/outgoing traffic to block unauthorized access and malicious activities targeting RDP sessions. By restricting open ports and whitelisting trusted IPs, they prevent attackers from exploiting exposed pathways to your system.

Steps to apply firewall protection for securing RDP:

Step 1. Access Windows Firewall

Press Win + R, type wf.msc, and hit Enter to open "Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security".

Step 2. Enable the Inbound Rule

Select "Inbound Rules" in the left pane.

Enable Inbound Rule

Step 3. Define the Type of Rule to Activate

Right-click "Inbound Rules" > "New Rule" > Choose "Port" > Click "Next".

Define The Type Of Rule

Step 4. Define the Port Type to Activate

Select "TCP" > Enter "3389" (default RDP port) > "Next".

Define The Port Type

Step 5. Allow or Block the Connection

Select "Allow the connection" > "Next".

Step 6. Define the Firewall Profile & Name to Apply

Check "Domain", "Private", and Public > Name the rule (e.g., "Secure RDP Access") > "Finish".

Way 3. Enable MFA - Extra Security

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is a security method requiring two or more verification factors (e.g., password + mobile code) to access resources. Unlike basic logins, MFA adds critical layers—like confirming your identity via phone—drastically reducing breach risks by blocking attackers even if they steal your password.

Steps to enable MFA for secure remote desktop access:

STEP 1: Download Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile (iOS/Android).

STEP 2: On your PC, go to Security Settings > Advanced Security Options > choose "Use an app" for verification.

Add New Way To Sign In Or Verify

STEP 3: Open Authenticator, tap + > "Personal Account" > "Scan a QR Code" (point camera at the PC screen).

STEP 4: If scanning fails, select "I can't scan the bar code" on PC > tap "Enter code manually" on mobile > input the PC-generated code.

Way 4. Change RDP port - External Soldier

The default RDP port (3389) is inherently unsafe – it's a publicly known external gateway that attackers constantly scan for vulnerabilities. Malicious actors exploit this open port to intercept connections, steal credentials, or inject malware between your device and the server.

Beyond VPNs, manually changing this port in Windows obscures your entry point, significantly boosting your RDP secure connection against automated attacks.

Steps to change your RDP port:

STEP 1: Pick an alternate port between 1024-49151 (e.g., 3390) – avoid common ports like 80/443.

STEP 2: Connect to your remote Windows machine via RDP.

Connect Remote Windows By RDP

STEP 3: Press WIN + R > type regedit > hit "Enter".

Start The Registry Editor

STEP 4: Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp

STEP 5: Double-click PortNumber > Select Decimal > Replace 3389 with your new port → Click "OK".

STEP 6: Restart your computer to apply changes.

Way 5. Use Access Controls - Reliable Monitor

Windows access controls enforce the principle of least privilege, limiting administrator accounts to essential tasks only. By restricting RDP settings modification and network resource access, they prevent overprivileged accounts from becoming attack vectors—ensuring remote users operate with minimal permissions unless explicitly elevated for specific actions.

Steps to configure User Account Control for Remote Desktop web access security:

STEP 1: Open Control Panel → Start menu → type "Control Panel" → Enter.

STEP 2: Navigate to System and Security → Security and Maintenance → "Change User Account Control settings".

STEP 3 Adjust the slider to one of these levels:

  • Always notify (most secure: prompts for all system changes)

  • Notify me only when apps try to make changes (default; dims desktop)

  • Notify me without desktop dimming (less disruptive)

  • Never notify (not recommended; disables UAC alerts)

Choose What To Be Notified About Changes

STEP 4: Click "OK" to save.

STEP 5: Confirm with "Yes" in the UAC prompt.

[5 Extra Tips] Improve Secure Remote Desktop Access

Beyond the core strategies we've covered, fortify your defenses further for Remote Desktop security with these 5 critical practices:

  1. Fortify Passwords: Avoid personal or company-related words, and never reuse passwords across logins. Use 12+ character mixes (letters, numbers, symbols).

  2. Enforce NLA (Network Level Authentication): Enable RDP's built-in NLA to require extra proof (smart card, OTP, or biometrics) before sessions start—blocking brute-force attempts.

  3. Implement Lockout Policies: Automatically lock accounts after 3-5 failed login attempts to halt credential-stuffing attacks.

  4. Monitor Active Sessions: Track user activities (logons, commands, file transfers) in real-time to detect anomalies like unusual access hours.

  5. Update Religiously: Patch Windows, RDP clients, VPNs, firewalls, and MFA tools monthly to close exploit windows.

9 Benefits of Remote Access & Best Practices for Modern Life

Our world is now connected in every direction. We work from airports, check home security from cafés, send files between devices across the house, and yes, even play PC games on our phones while waiting in line. All of this is powered by remote access, a quiet but essential technology that’s reshaped how we work, play, and solve everyday problems.

remote access

But not all remote desktop software delivers the same experience. Some tools lag, lack security, or feel too complicated. DeskIn solves that with a fast, secure, and user-friendly design, proving how powerful the benefits of remote access can be when done right.

In this guide, we’ll explore the top advantages of remote access, security best practices, and why DeskIn stands out as the smarter choice for work, gaming, and everyday digital convenience.

What Is Remote Access & How Does It Work

Remote access is the ability to connect to and control another device, such as a computer, tablet, phone, or server, from anywhere in the world.

Remote access means:

  • Opening work files without anyone in front of the desk

  • Helping your family fix devices remotely

  • Operating office computers during travel

  • Playing high-end PC games on your phone

  • Transferring files without physically touching a machine

It’s the digital equivalent of “being there,” minus the effort.

Types of Remote Access

  • Remote Desktop: This gets you full visual and interactive control of another computer’s interface. You can open apps, make changes to files, and run software or even games from elsewhere as if you were sitting in front of the machine itself. Tools like Windows Remote Desktop, TeamViewer, and DeskIn take this concept further with better streaming and less lag.

  • Remote File Access: Designed for people who only need files, not full control. This method lets you browse, pull, or send documents between devices or servers. Think of it as reaching into another computer’s storage from anywhere. It’s efficient, but not as powerful as complete remote PC access for workflows that require full interaction.

  • Remote Administration: Made for IT and sysadmin staff, as well as developers who support servers or specialized systems. This sort of access is for maintenance, configuration, updates, monitoring, and troubleshooting; often without touching the actual desktop interface.

9 Key Benefits of Remote Access

Remote access isn’t just for IT people anymore. It’s now a lifestyle upgrade, a productivity booster, and thanks to DeskIn, a surprisingly fun tech superpower.

Let’s break down the biggest remote access benefits and why they matter.

1. Work From Anywhere, Anytime

One of the biggest benefits of remote access is the freedom to work without being tied to a single physical device. Whether you’re at home, on a train, or halfway across the world, modern remote work solutions let you connect to your office systems instantly.

With DeskIn, this experience becomes even smoother with ultra-low latency, high-resolution screen streaming, and stable cross-platform support. This means your “office desktop” is now reachable from your laptop, phone, or tablet, with no noticeable lag.

For digital nomads, hybrid workers, and late-night deadline warriors: this is life-changing.

2. Everyday Convenience: Control Your PC from the Couch

Remote access isn’t just for work now; it shines in daily life too. Think about those moments when your movie is on your PC, but you’re already cozy in bed. Or when you want to check if a file has finished downloading without getting up.
With DeskIn, you can tap your phone or tablet, connect to your PC, and control everything as if you were sitting right in front of it.

3. Remote Gaming on Any Device

DeskIn Remote Gaming

Gamers get some of the coolest advantages of remote access.
With DeskIn’s ZeroSync low-latency engine and cross-system compatibility, you can turn your phone into a portable gaming screen powered by your PC. Whether you’re outside the house, at a café, or traveling, your full gaming rig is always just a tap away.

4. Cost Savings on Hardware & Travel

One major benefit of remote access is cutting unnecessary costs. Instead of buying multiple powerful devices, you can simply use one main machine and connect to it from anywhere. For businesses, the savings multiply, fewer laptops to purchase, fewer office desktops needed, and fewer on-site IT visits.
DeskIn’s fast file transfer and unattended access cut down even more physical overhead.

5. Improved Collaboration with Shared Access

Remote access is more than viewing another device; it’s collaboration made simple.
DeskIn lets teams work together in real time, helping each other solve problems, review work, or guide clients through tasks without physically being there.

6. Business Continuity in Emergencies

When unexpected problems hit, such as weather shutdowns, travel delays, or device failures, having remote access software for business can keep your operations running smoothly.
With DeskIn, you can still reach critical workstations, access files, or diagnose issues even if your team can’t physically get to the office.

7. Centralized Data with Better Security Controls

Businesses often struggle with data scattered across personal laptops, USBs, and email attachments. Remote access solves this by keeping information centralized on secure office servers. Instead of moving files around, employees simply connect to where the data already lives.
DeskIn adds granular permission controls, from camera and microphone access to file transfer settings, making it one of the most secure remote access solutions available.

8. Easier Management of Multiple Devices

If you use multiple machines, a home PC, office computer, laptop, tablet, or server, remote access eliminates constant device-switching headaches.
DeskIn gives you a single dashboard where you can check status, move files, open apps, or even reboot devices remotely.

9. Remote Teaching and IT Support Made Simple

A strong remote access solution makes teaching and support effortless. DeskIn lets instructors demo specialized software operations in real-time for remote students, allows IT trainers to guide steps directly on trainees' devices with remote support features, and even helps you assist parents with everyday phone or computer issues—no in-person visit needed.

Best Practices for Secure & Effective Remote Access

The more you rely on remote access in your daily workflow, the more important it becomes to secure every connection. Following these best practices ensures you get the full benefits of remote access without compromising safety.

And the good news is, DeskIn already includes most of these protections by design, giving you fast performance and truly secure remote access without complexity.

1. Use Flexible Access Controls

Strong access control sits at the core of every powerful remote work solution. Rotating passwords, managing allowlists/blocklists to control who can connect, and enabling 2FA help keep your sessions private and protected. DeskIn makes these controls simple and intuitive, so staying secure doesn’t slow you down.

2. Protect Data With Strong Encryption

Every action, from cursor movement, file transfer to audio data, travels through the internet during a remote session. That’s why strong encryption is essential. DeskIn uses bank-grade AES-256 end-to-end encryption to keep your data locked down and unreadable to anyone else, ensuring your data cannot be intercepted, modified, or misused.

3. Require Authorization Before Every Session

Every connection request should be verified by the controlled device. This simple step blocks unauthorized access and keeps your devices safe. DeskIn requires explicit approval for each session unless you enable secure unattended access, giving you control over who connects and when.

4. Limit What Remote Users Can Access

Not every session needs full control. Restricting permissions like file transfer, screen visibility, or keyboard control helps maintain privacy and compliance. DeskIn allows precise adjustment of these controls to match your comfort level and business needs.

5. Enable Privacy Protections

Even with strong security, privacy still matters. Tools like privacy screen mode or auto-lock prevent others from seeing your data during or after a remote session. DeskIn includes these protections so your setup remains shielded even when you step away.

6. Choose Providers With Verified Security Certifications

Anyone can claim to offer secure remote access, but only a few solutions meet internationally recognized standards. DeskIn is encrypted with AES-256 and certified under ISO 27001 for information security management and ISO 9001 for quality, ensuring your remote access experience is backed by strong compliance frameworks.

Discord Screen Share Fail and Lag? Stream Smoother with DeskIn

DIscord screen sharing not work

Ever tried sharing your game and the Discord screen share freezes mid-fight or crashes during a call? You’re not alone. From Discord screen share not working to lag, black screens, or poor quality when you share screen on Discord mobile, the experience often misses the mark, especially for gaming, design, or support.

That’s where DeskIn comes in.

As a Discord alternative and screen mirroring app, DeskIn delivers low-latency screen sharing, full control, and crystal-clear resolution. Whether you need a free remote desktop for work or the best screen sharing tool for your next stream—DeskIn’s got you.

Let’s break it down.

Free download DeskIn

How Discord Screen Share Works and Why It Sometimes Fails

So, how does Discord screen share actually work?

At its core, the feature captures whatever’s happening on your screen, whether it’s a game, a browser tab, or a full desktop, and streams it to other users in a voice channel or call. Just click the “share your screen” icon near your voice controls, choose the screen or app you want to share, and select go live. Then, your friends can now see what you share.

But that’s where the simplicity ends. Once you try to stream a fast-paced game, a high-res design file, or even switch between apps, the cracks begin to show.

DIscord problem

Common Problems With Discord Screen Share

Let’s break down some frequent (and frustrating) issues users report:

  • No Audio: You’re sharing your screen, but nobody hears your game, video, or mic. It’s often caused by app permissions, wrong output settings, or Discord not picking up the right audio source, or browser version being used, which has limitations with audio sharing.

  • Black Screen: You click “Go Live” and nothing happens, just a black screen. This happens due to driver problems, outdated Discord versions, or the application being shared being in fullscreen mode.

  • Poor Quality on Mobile: When you try to share a screen on Discord mobile, the resolution tanks. Text becomes unreadable, and gameplay turns into a pixelated mess, which can be caused by Discord not handling the resolution correctly.

  • Crashing During Game Streaming: Especially with GPU-heavy games, streaming in high quality, streaming with certain applications or multi-monitor setups, Discord can crash mid-stream, leaving you and your friends staring at a frozen screen or having to restart the call.

  • Internal Limitations for High-Res or High-FPS Sharing: Want to stream in 4K or even 144FPS? That's not gonna happen. Discord caps resolution and frame rate unless you pay for Nitro, and even then, performance isn’t always reliable.

Why Discord Screen Share is Not Working or Lagging

If you’ve ever Googled “Discord screen share not working” or “how to fix Discord screen share lag," you and half the internet have searched that too. Here’s why it happens

  • Server-Side Limitations: Discord routes everything through its servers. If they’re under load (which happens often during peak hours), your stream slows down or buffers endlessly.

  • Lack of Hardware Optimization: Unlike purpose-built streaming tools, Discord doesn’t fully tap into GPU acceleration or advanced video encoding, leading to lag, desync, and frame drops.

  • Device and OS Conflicts: Old drivers, missing permissions, and security settings (especially on Mac and Windows 11) can block the screen capture entirely.

  • App-Specific Bugs: Certain programs like Photoshop or games running in full-screen exclusive mode just don’t play well with Discord screen share; you’ll either get a black screen or constant crash.

  • Lack of permissions: Discord may not have the necessary permissions to access your screen or microphone, leading to the streaming failing.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Free download DeskIn

Tips to Safely Use Unattended Access on Any Device

Even the most secure unattended remote access software needs backup from good user habits. Security isn’t just about tools; it’s about how you use them. These simple practices help you keep control, stay protected, and avoid unwanted surprises.

Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Skip the lazy defaults like “admin123” or your pet’s name. A strong, unique password is your first line of defense. Use a trusted password manager to generate and store secure credentials you won’t forget.

Whitelist Trusted Devices Only

Keep your circle tight. Only allow known and verified devices to connect. With DeskIn, device whitelisting puts you in full control; unknown devices don’t even get a foot in the door.

Turn Off Access When Not in Use

No need to leave the door wide open. If you’re not planning to use unattended access for a while—say, you're off the grid or on vacation—disable it until you return. One click can make a big difference.

Keep Software and OS Updated

Outdated software is a hacker’s dream. Always keep DeskIn, your OS, and antivirus software up to date to patch vulnerabilities before they become a problem.

Stay Connected Anytime With DeskIn Unattended Access

Life doesn’t always happen in one place—and your work shouldn’t have to either.
